Class Descriptions
Aqua Mobility
Enhance joint mobility and flexibility through gentle water-based exercises, improving range of motion without straining joints. Ideal for those with arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain, joint replacements, and limited mobility. Exercises take place in shallow water, using various equipment for cardio, strength, balance, and walking. Experience the benefits of water exercise in a safe, supportive environment.
AquaWaves
The best of both shallow and deep water aquafit. AquaWaves focuses on cardiovascular endurance with full body toning and an aqua stretch segment for relaxation. Aqua belts are provided for flotation.
Ballet Barre Fit
Combines ballet barre exercises, with flexibility, core conditioning, muscular endurance and mat work to develop a toned physique. No dance experience is required. Suggested footwear: socks with grips on the bottom.
Beginner Yoga
Offered at a slower pace, focuses on the basics of yoga, breathwork and movement.
Bootcamp
Increase your strength and cardio with this non-stop total body bootcamp workout. Includes a 5 minute warm-up and cool down + stretch.
Chair Yoga
Helps with stiff and aching joints, balance, posture and alignment. Includes 30 minutes of seated yoga poses that strengthen the body and 30 minutes standing, using the chair and other props for stability and support.
Chair Zumba Gold
Chair Zumba Gold (low/medium intensity) is perfect for those with mobility or balance issues, young or old, as it is done in a chair. The class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba choreography adapted for chair exercise. Improves balance and coordination, increases strength and flexibility, as well as improves cardiovascular health.
Core Stability
Exercises for a strong core to improve stability, reduce back pain, and support all movements. Options provided for all fitness levels.
Core Strength
30 minute abdominal and lower back conditioning class. Focuses on strengthening and improving posture and balance.
Core Yoga
Designed to increase core strength and enhance postural alignment of the feet, pelvis and torso while improving postural alignment, awareness, balance, and stability of the pelvis and spine.
Fusion Fitness
An intermediate mix of cardio, standing Pilates, Barre, strength training with light weights and core mat work. This class has components of balance, flexibility and stability.
Introduction to Spinfit
Learn the fundamentals of Spinfit including bike setup, safety, resistance, and cadence. Enjoy a short ride set to motivating music and gain the confidence to join any spin class. Bring a bottle of water.
Krav Maga
This program is based heavily on Krav Maga and a variety of self-protection strategies, giving you the skills needed to protect yourself in various situations.
Mat Pilates
A beginner/intermediate level mat class focusing on the foundation of BASI moves where participants flow from one move to another using the body’s own core strength, stability, and coordination skills. Light, flexible workout gear is optimal.
Mindful Meditation
Be calmer, less stressed, focused and grounded through instruction, discussion and practice.
Nordic Walking
Nordic walking is a walking technique using poles to engage both the upper and lower body. It provides an effective full-body workout and is a fun, social activity. This 45-minute class covers fundamentals and techniques to enhance posture and gait. Participants must bring their own poles. The class is held based on weather conditions.
PowerPump
5 minute warm-up, 40-50 minutes of muscular strength and endurance followed by 5-10 minutes of stretch and cool down.
Rehabilitative Functional Fitness
Designed for those recovering from injury or medical conditions (stroke, surgery, knee and hip) who are ready to get back on the move. Improve balance, mobility and functionality in this small group setting.
Restorative Gentle Yoga
Let go of everyday tension and stress in a nurturing, inclusive environment. Increase balance, strength, stamina, flexibility and vitality. Modifications for individual body types and physical limitations make this an excellent class for beginners. Alternative postures are offered for experienced participants or those who want a greater challenge. Emphasis on breath-work and mindfulness leaves everyone feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. Maximum 8 participants.
Restorative Spin
Not your typical high-intensity Spinfit class. Slow down, reset, and leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more balanced. This gentle ride includes breathwork and mindfulness techniques to calm the mind, guided visualization for deep relaxation and a soothing, immersive music experience. Improve circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, lower stress levels, and improve sleep and mental clarity.
Shine Dance Fitness
Full-body cardio + toning workout based in traditional jazz, ballet, and hip hop. Get ready to sweat, smile, shimmy, and shake your worries (and calories) away.
Spinfit
Get a fun, high-energy workout in our Spinfit Studio.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a series of gentle movements that can be done either standing or seated, increasing circulation, strengthening the bones, and improving balance. Practised regularly, it adds vitality and well-being to life.
Triple Threat
An exciting total body workout to get you fit and feeling great. 15 minutes cardio conditioning, 15 minutes functional strength training, and 15 minutes Pilates core stability training.
Uplift
UPLIFT is a full-body workout that combines traditional strength moves with iconic music, and sprinkles in some booty-shaking fun to create a unique fitness experience resulting in increased muscular strength and endurance. UPLIFT classes start with a cardio warm-up, followed by standing routines with equipment, alternating between the upper and lower body. A challenging balance track follows before transitioning to the mat for the second half of the class, ending with a deep stretch cooldown. This uplifting workout leaves participants feeling strong and confident.

Share the life-enhancing benefits of regular exercise and have fun with this low-impact class combining cardiovascular exercises, muscle toning and stretching.

Weight Training for Men
New to weightlifting or looking for a refresher? This course, led by a fitness professional, teaches participants how to use the fitness centre equipment and free weights. For men.
Weight Training for Women
New to weightlifting or looking for a refresher? This course, led by a fitness professional, teaches participants how to use the fitness centre equipment and free weights. For women.
Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga is described as the yoga of surrender. Practitioners hold postures for up to 5 minutes, using mindful breathing techniques to relax the body and surrender to gravity. Because of the length of time the postures are held, Yin Yoga accesses deep tissues in the body in a way that other styles do not.
Yin/Yang Yoga
A two-part class that combines the invigorating energy of an active flow with the restorative power of long-held passive poses. Experience the perfect balance of movement and stillness, engaging both physical and mental faculties.
Yoga Flow
A dynamic style of yoga which joins physical postures and breath, creating a steady rhythm for the practice. Yoga Flow is designed to cultivate heat in the body, including sun salutations, balance and strength postures with a strong focus on the power of breath awareness.
Zumba
Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness class. An effective aerobic workout!
Fitness Instructor Apprenticeship Training
with SJCC Health & Wellness Director Carla Gencher
Are you interested in becoming a group fitness instructor?
Register for certification through a fitness instructor training organization (CanFitPro, YMCA etc.) and complete your apprenticeship hours with Carla. Learn choreographic methods and the basic components of a group fitness class, cueing strategies, teaching techniques and styles to deliver effective and enjoyable classes.
