SJCC Spotlight

We are pleased to share a new “SJCC Spotlight” to celebrate the programs and people that make the SJCC truly special! Stay tuned each month to learn about unique aspects of the Centre that showcase how the SJCC fosters a deep sense of connection and belonging for everyone in our community

Harris Prehogan: More Than a Member

Harris Prehogan isn’t just a member of the SJCC – he has embedded himself in the entire community. His kids attend the neighbouring school as well as SJCC summer camps and programs. Harris is also the captain of the JMHL hockey team; a winning team to boot.

But the history doesn’t stop there. Harris says his involvement with JCC started in the 80s when he was a kid himself.

“I was a regular participant in after school programming, athletics, and weekend and after school ski trips. Basically, I’ve been a regular for my entire youth and most of my adulthood.  It’s always been a nonnegotiable that my family would be loyal members of this centre.”

Harris has been a part of the JMHL hockey league for almost 20 years, assuming the role of captain of the “Red Team” since 2011, leading the team to multiple championship wins. He worked closely with beloved community member Jon Braun for many years. Harris says that his time building the league with Jon was an extremely rewarding experience.

“My close relationship with Jon [helped] create a Men’s league that we could all be proud of. Jon would always make sure that even players on our league waitlist felt appreciated, doing things like bringing them in to skate as a spare with the hopes that a spot would open for them the following season. It was only 7-8 seasons that we worked together before he sadly passed away. [This league] is my way of helping to carry on his amazing legacy.”

When it comes to the SJCC facilities, Harris says his whole family has enjoyed the centre at one point or another – and it feels like home.

“All my kids have enjoyed use of the facilities throughout the years starting as infants in the pool! My Dad, Ron Prehogan, is a past President and was held that position when the new building opened here on the campus in 1999. My kids understand what this place means to our family and are proud call it “home”.
