Updates

June 8, 2021

We have received many inquiries about the status of the SJCC Outdoor Pool and we are reaching out today to provide you with an update on what we know so far.

At this point we are still waiting for word from the Ontario Government on when, and how, we will be permitted to open our pool. We are unsure if we will be able to offer family swims or only lap swimming but will let you know when we have more information.

Our Aquatics Team is hard at work prepping the pool as there is plenty to do to get it swim ready after a long snowy Ottawa winter. Once the pool is filled, we need a thumbs-up from a City of Ottawa Health Inspector before we can officially allow members to take a dip. And although we are in the queue, with every pool in the city hoping to open soon, there is unfortunately a backlog of requests for health inspections across the city.

Typically, during “normal” times, our outdoor pool opens around the third week of June. We are aiming to have it ready to go around that time and we will keep you posted on our progress.

Your SJCC Membership

In order to use the outdoor pool your SJCC membership must be active.
Please contact Membership Director, Patrice Berdowski, via email pberdowski@jccottawa.com to get your membership restarted (no phone calls please). She will send you the forms and let you know how you can submit your payment online. There is no need to come into the SJCC to get your membership started.

We are doing our best to be ready for a great summer at the SJCC Outdoor Pool and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we figure out the logistics of how it will all work.

Please continue to read our email updates, check our website and follow us on Facebook to get all the most up-to-date information as we prepare to re-open the SJCC. If you know someone who is not receiving our emails, but would like to, please click here to submit their email address to our list.

We look forward to seeing you soon at the SJCC!

May 13, 2021

As you would have heard by now, the Ontario stay at home order has been extended by another two weeks, taking us into June. While we are eager to re-open and welcome everyone back, we sincerely hope that these measures will put an end to all of this opening and closing.

While the Soloway JCC remains closed our Ganon Preschool continues to operate as usual and the Greenberg Families Library is offering curb-side pick-up of library materials twice a week. Take a look through the virtual shelves here and email library@jccottawa.com to arrange a pick-up.

Stay fit with a Virtual Group Fitness Class. Check out the schedule here and join us on Zoom for a fun and energizing workout.

We are looking forward to summer and all the excitement that comes with that like opening our outdoor pool and SJCC Summer Camps. There is still room available in some groups, email camp@jccottawa.com for more information or to be put on a waiting list.

Once we get the green light we will be in touch with our plans to reopen the Soloway JCC. In the meantime, stay safe.

We look forward to seeing you soon

April 14, 2021

I hope you’re all staying well and if you haven’t received at least your first dose of the vaccine, you can schedule it soon. I am receiving my first dose within the next week. I have never been so happy to get a shot in my life. Of course we know that the vaccine in and of itself isn’t going to change the way we live our lives in the immediate future. Our most recent closure is a clear example that we must continue to be cautious in our approach to resume life as we want it.

I want to thank so many of you for your kind and supportive comments regarding our virtual tribute to our dear friend and colleague Jon Braun. We lost Jon in March of 2020 just before the pandemic hit in full force. Not a day goes by where all of us who knew Jon don’t miss him. The tribute is available on our website if you missed it or wish to view it again you can find it here.

We have once again rolled out a variety of different virtual classes to stimulate mind, body, and spirit. Please visit jccottawa.com often to see what classes might be of interest to you. We also are participating in virtual events to commemorate Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut.

Yom Hazikaron pays tribute to those who have given their lives to preserve the spirit of Israel as the Jewish homeland and bastion of democracy and religious freedom that Israel strives to be. Our virtual memorial is a collaboration of the Vered Israel Cultural & Educational Program, The Embassy of Israel in Canada, Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Soloway JCC and is available to view here until tonight at 8:30 pm.

Yom Ha’atzmaut commemorates the creation of Israel as the Jewish homeland and this year marks 73 years of independence. We are celebrating with a full roster of virtual programs including Hatikvah in Songs and A Virtual Tour of Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut both in partnership with JNF Canada/Ottawa, a cooking demonstration with Chef Ilan Dagan and more. You can find all the programs and registration information here.

We are in the process of planning for summer and looking forward to a full season of our sensational Day Camps and outdoor pool. Camps are slated to begin on July 5. If all goes well we plan on opening the outdoor pool by mid-June. We will keep you posted and hope that the province allows us to fully re-open in a few weeks.

We are grateful for your continued membership and charitable support. Stay well and I hope we all get vaccinated soon so that we can enjoy the day when we can welcome everyone back to the JCC in full force!

Stay Safe
We look forward to seeing you back at the Soloway JCC.

January 13, 2021

I hope you’re all staying well. It’s been 10 months since we first closed the JCC as a result of the pandemic. We’ve had several starts and stops during this period, and based on the decision to declare a state of emergency in Ontario effective Thursday, January 14, the earliest we can reopen our facilities to members is Thursday, February 11.

It’s disheartening yet our collective goal must be to stay healthy and get this virus under control. I know several people who have had COVID-19, and it is nothing short of a nightmare. I urge you all to stay safe and abide by the guidelines set by government. As much as we are inconvenienced, these guidelines are designed to help us all stay safe.

Although we have been disrupted in our ability to be the foundation to so many of you for wellness, both physically and mentally, the JCC continues to offer a wide array of programs online and live via Zoom. During this latest shutdown we are offering 25 live fitness classes each week plus links on our website to many pre-recorded fitness classes. Thanks to Carla Gencher, Ryan Armitage, and their team of talented instructors for their efforts in providing these wonderful classes.

We continue to offer cultural and educational programs online such as 21st Century Israeli Literature, Astronomy 101-Understanding the Night Sky, Behind the Headlines, and Jewish Music in Jewish Canada to name just a few. We have participated in author talks with JCC’s in Toronto, Atlanta, and Montreal. We continue to drive our Jewish mission and connection to Israel with programs like The Israeli Film Festival and The Western Walls Tour, a live 3D tour from Jerusalem. Roslyn Wollock and Ella Dagan have been outstanding in searching for and delivering unique and interesting programs.

We strive to continue to serve you even if our doors are closed. Our Ganon preschool remains open to serve the educational, developmental, and child care needs of families with young children.

Remember to visit jccottawa.com often for updates on programs and other important information related to the JCC. If someone you know is not receiving communications from the JCC and would like to be added to our email list, please click here to add a name or update an email address.

We are committed to keeping you busy during these challenging times.

Stay healthy and remember that jccottawa.com is your continued link to the many wonderful programs we continue to offer.

Warm Regards,

Barry Sohn
