ENLIGHTENED JEWISH EDUCATION

New! From Shtetl to The Goldene Medina

How Yiddish stories and poems responded to our ancestor's journey from the Shtetl/Eastern Europe to North America, the Golden Land. This course will look at short stories and novellas by some of the great Yiddish writers – among them Shalom Aleichem, I.L. Peretz, Shalom Asch, David Bergleson, Isaac B. Singer, Dvora Baron. All stories will be read and discussed in English.

New! A Midrashic Look at Torah "Reading what's not there"

The Torah tells its stories on a "need to know basis", often leaving out important details.

The very nature of its narrative requires the reader to fill in the gaps with his/her imagination. The Rabbis of the 'midrash' created stories about stories in the Bible, presenting keen interpretations and powerful lessons, expanding the narratives and widening their horizons.

New! Deuteronomy/Devarim

On the eve of entry into the promised land that Moses will never see, the Israelite leader addresses his nation one last time. Deuteronomy re-tells the stories and laws of the Torah from the mouth of the prophet and in so doing teaches the Israelites about God, nationhood, free will, justice, and community, while at the same time expounding revolutionary philosophies of both religion and politics. Deuteronomy is the text that makes Judaism into the "religion of the book." Join us as we round out our discussion of the Torah with this final and arguably most significant piece of writing in the history of Judaism.
