Greenberg Families Library


Since 1998, the Greenberg Families Library has been serving the recreational, educational and cultural needs of Ottawa’s Jewish community.

The Library holds close to 10,000 books, many topical periodicals, and hundreds of Jewish-interest feature films and documentaries. Our catalogue is now accessible on the internet at www.jccottawa.com/programs/library. Simply click on “Search the Catalogue”.

We are pleased to offer our patrons a Music Appreciation Series, a Film Series, as well as lectures known as ‘The Author Talks’ in which guest authors are invited to speak. The collection of the Ottawa Jewish Genealogical Society is housed in the library and is accessible for on-site research.

Most importantly, we are always pleased to help you make the most of our library. Regardless of your age or background, the Greenberg Families Library has something for you.

MY FATHER MY LORD

This moving Israeli drama is about a pious yet austere rabbi who is a respected elder in a Hasidic community. His young son’s questions create dissension between father and son. A holiday at the seashore intended to bring the family together and heal their ideological rift turns to tragedy. Hebrew with English subtitles.

LEMON TREE

This powerful drama features a lonely Palestinian widow who is left to tend to her family’s West Bank lemon grove. When the new Israeli Minister of Defense and his wife move in next door the military determines the trees a security threat and orders them cut down. To prevent this the widow then engages the services of a lawyer. Mira the wife of the Defense Ministers is conflicted about the justice of her action. Hebrew with English subtitles.

OUT FOR LOVE…BE BACK SHORTLY

An autobiographical documentary by Israeli director Dan Katzir, a former officer and paratrooper, this film presents rare and important historic footage of the divisions and violence in Israeli society during the era of the Rabin assassination. Concurrently the film is also a love story as Katzir records his own evolving relationship with Iris a chraming young girl about to be inducted into the military.

THE COUNTERFEITERS

This feature film examines the true story of Solomon Sorowitsch, a swindler who was known in Berlin as the “King of the Counterfeiters”. His life of easy money is changed when he is arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Sorowitsch and other inmates are given good treatment in return for making counterfeit bank notes to fund the Nazi war effort. The inmates are faced with the dilemma of helping the Nazis and staying alive or sabotaging the currency and facing immediate execution.
